The worst celebrity business fails

Who would have thought that Christy Turlington, Claudia Schiffer, Elle Macpherson and Naomi Campbell could fail at something?

Fashion Café was an international theme-restaurant franchise created in 1995 by the most popular supermodels at the time. The idea was quite similar to Planet Hollywood. However, it didn’t work out because the restaurants’ investors Tommaso and Francesco Buti were charged with money laundering. Fashion Café was finally closed in 1998.

You may know Flavor Flav as a member of Public Enemy, but did you know that he wanted to open a chain of restaurants similar to KFC and Popeyes?

Not so long ago, in January 2011, William Jonathan Drayton Jr., better known as Flavor Flav opened a restaurant of his own called Flav’s Fried Chicken in Clinton, Iowa. Unfortunately, three months later the restaurant was closed after many disputes between Flav and his co-founder.

Jennifer Lopez also had big business plans and they included opening a place called Madres Restaurant.

In 2002, J Lo opened a Latin restaurant in Pasadena, California, but it only lasted six years. It seems like people didn’t really like Madres because it received many poor reviews! After six years, Jenny From the Block finally decided to close the restaurant’s door for good. But it’s okay, she’s still doing a great job at being a multi-talented celebrity.

Enough with the “K” already! The Kardashian Kard was a business idea developed by Kim, Khloe and Kourtney Kardashian.

As you already know, Kardashian sisters are generally successful at their businesses that usually involve cosmetics and beauty products, but their credit card ideas was just… awful. The three famous sisters launched the card that was geared toward “financially unsophisticated” young adults. In short, the idea was unclear, the fees were exorbitant and the Kardashian Kard was done less than a month after it debuted.

Unlike other celebrities who open restaurants or just launch questionable business cards (sorry, Kim), Kim Basinger decided to purchase a whole town!

In 1989, famous actress bought the town of Braselton, Georgia for $20 million! Her intention was to turn the town into a tourist attraction with a bunch of festivals and movie studios. Unfortunately, Kim didn’t quite succeed  and she had to sell the town for $1 million after four years.

It seems that making a fortune out of luxurious hotels around the world isn’t something that runs in the Hilton family after all.

Nicky Hilton  had a business project that attracted a lot of interest during the 2000’s. Nicky actually wanted to open Nicky-O Hotel, but her plans for a 94-room boutique hotel in Miami was ruined by many delays, which finally led to filing for bankruptcy protection just one year after being announced.

In 1994, one of the most famous movie directors Steven Spielberg and Dreamworks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg opened Dive!, a fun submarine-themed restaurant.

It was located in Los Angeles and Las Vegas and it was shaped like a yellow submarine. But this is the best part- every half hour, it simulated a dive with flashing red lights! Unfortunately, sales were not going so well and Dive! had to close in 1999.

Britney Spears also had a business idea that unfortunately failed. In 2002, famous pop princess opened a restaurant called Nyla.

It was Brit’s attempt to bring Cajun flavors to Manhattan and the restaurant was named after the state abbreviations for New York and Louisiana. Not so long after opening, the restaurant experienced serious health-code violations and some staff turnover and Britney had to close it. In her defense, she was only 21 years old at the time.

Eva Longoria is one of the most successful actresses in Hollywood, however her restaurant project failed miserably.

In 2008, the Golden Globe-nominated actress opened Beso, a Hollywood restaurant with her business partner and celebrity chef Todd English. The business seemed to be going fine, so she opened another Beso in Las Vegas, but it eventually went bankrupt. The Hollywood restaurant is still in business, but Eva tried to open SHE restaurant in Las Vegas and it was closed in 2014.

Imma let you finish, but before Kanye West was hanging out with Karl Lagerfeld, he actually failed at one of his first fashion attempts.

In 2009, the Grammy-winning rapper and producer tried to launch a clothing line named Pastelle. Unfortunately, Pastelle was doomed before it even became real. According to some sources, two days after photos previewing the collection became present on the internet, but it was announced that the line was canceled. We guess that Kanye didn’t like it after all.

In 1995, professional wrestler Hulk Hogan opened a pasta restaurant named Pastamania in Minnesota’s Mall of America.

Hogan was obviously another celeb who really wanted to more money by becoming a restaurant owner, but it didn’t really work out for him. So what happened? Although Hulk was trying to promote his restaurant during his World Championship Wrestling TV appearances, but the business went broke in a year.

Natalie Portman’s love for animals was so big, that she decided to wear clothing and shoes that were made by using no animal byproducts.

Then, she decided that you could do it too! That’s why she created Te Casan, a line of vegan-friendly shoes. Unfortunately, in less than a year, the parent company folded because the sales were not doing so well, and Portman had to give up on her business.

Heidi Montag has always been obsessed with fashion, so it doesn’t surprise us that she decided to become a designer!

Reality TV-star launched her clothing line called Heidiwood in 2007, when it was actually picked by Anchor Blue Retail Group. However, one year later, this company decided to discontinue Heidi Montag’s line. Oh, Heidi. We guess she should have stayed at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandise with her former co-star Lauren Conrad after all.

Vince McMahon also didn’t open a restaurant, but his idea failed anyway.

In 2000, the former chairman of the World Wrestling Federation Entertainment (WWE). announced that he was starting the XFL, a professional football league that would complement the off-season of the National Football League. Vince partnered with NBC, and they agreed to air XFL games! However, the league lasted just one season before NBC stopped airing it due to low ratings.

Mandy Moore launched her own clothing line called Mblem back in 2005.

The famous singer and actress worked hard on her project for three years, but then she had to shut it down. Mandy explained: “If I were to dip my toe back in there, it would have to be the right situation… a great partnership that could represent a true reflection of me and my ideas, and you know, that wasn’t happening.” Does that mean that the real reason for her failure was a conspiracy? We guess we will never know!
